Chateau Montelena has been making wine in Calistoga since 1972, when Jim Barrett bought the rundown estate and began replanting it to Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. In 1976, the winery's Chardonnay won the famous Judgment of Paris blind tasting, beating top French white Burgundies and putting Napa Valley on the map as a serious wine region. This Cabernet carries that same estate style: structured, ageworthy, and built for the long haul rather than early drinking.

Tasting Notes: The palate is bursting with a dynamic array of fruit, acid and tannin, tied together with fresh mint and graphite. A soft, velvety texture from the Merlot in the blend rounds off the coarser edges and lends refinement. The wine is approachable now but will build complexity with time in the glass.

The Finish: Baking spices come into focus here along with notes of earth and toasted almond. The tannins are chalky rather than angular, and roasted hazelnut complements the fresh raspberry and black tea. This is an elegant, restrained, food friendly wine.

The fruit is aged in a mix of French and American oak, a detail that shows up in the layered spice and toast notes without ever overpowering the fruit. It is a wine made for people who plan to hold onto a bottle for a few years, not open it tonight.
