Tenuta San Guido is the producer of Sassicaia, the Bordeaux-style blend that started the Super Tuscan movement in the 1970s. Proper Sassicaia still sells for hundreds of dollars a bottle, but since the 2000 vintage, the estate has also made a wine called Guidalberto, sourced from younger vines on the same property in Bolgheri, coastal Tuscany.
The 2023 vintage is made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Merlot, grown in estate vineyards where the warm Mediterranean climate and well drained soils suit both varieties. The color is a deep, dark ruby red that is by no means opaque. The aromas are typically Italian, with notes of forest floor, herbs, and anise over dark red cherries. Lively acidity lifts delicate raspberry fruit that is layered with savory, soy sauce notes, rich licorice, and gamey hints. A perfumed midpalate reveals rich red plum fruit and licorice, the tannins are very fine, and the wine is medium bodied at most. The finish is soft and lingers.
It pairs well with meat sauce pastas, veal, and wild game, and the bottle can be personalized with a label or engraving.
