Opus One is a joint venture between the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, first produced in 1979. The winery is in Oakville, Napa Valley, and produces a single wine each year in the Bordeaux tradition, blended from the five classic varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (typically 80%+), Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.
The 2022 vintage is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot, and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Harvest began August 24, earlier than usual due to anticipated heat. The wine shows lifted aromas of cassis, graphite, and cinnamon-dusted red berries on the nose. On the palate it's luxuriously creamy with a silkier, more velvety texture than the 2021. Berry fruit with a touch of sweetness, balanced by firm tannins. The finish is floral and gently sweet with a saline mineral note.
